But unless there is explicit written consent, the sale of donated items would open the Hall up to huge amounts of legal risk. And cultural heritage institutions tend to be pretty risk averse. So that is why they don't just sell off excess items.

Extracted from above group photo featuring Babe Ruth. The player between Schang and James could possibly be Ray Caldwell, seek confirmation on that, one of his accomplishments being to finish a game after being struck by lightning in what turned out to be his final Major League season.. The player between James and Ruth could be Ossie Vitt.

Yeesh, finally the answer I was looking for. Thank you for saying that. And I'm sure a lot of people would be upset over donating the stuff in good faith and having it dumped somewhere too but I guess it is what it is.

Baseball encyclopedias used to list Jerry Kane as William Jeremiah Kane. That's why the image below shows him as W. Kane. The New York Clipper article that accompanied the image clearly mentioned his having been with the 1890 St. Louis Browns and even presented a few stats for the 8 games he played for them.

Somewhere along the line, the powers-that-be changed Jerry Kane's formal name to Jeremiah Joseph Kane. He is listed that way in both Baseball-Reference.com and Retrosheet. I don't think that invalidates the image, but I'm presenting what I know about the situation for interested parties to ponder.

Baseball-Reference.com appears to be using the same image for Jerry Kane as UKBaseballFan posted to this forum back in 2007.

I'm not sure this image is Jerry Kane, the part-time catcher with the Browns in 1890. I came across a reference in the St. Louis Post-Disptach on December 3, 1889 noting that the St. Louis Browns signed William Kane, catcher with Evansville (IN) in 1889. Tracking him over the next few months in the St. Louis papers, you learn he was from Collinsville, IL with battery-mate Otto Von der Broeck. He played in a few games with the Browns in preseason, and was released on April 12, 1890.

On April 20, 1890, the Post-Dispatch notes that "Kane, an East St. Louis catcher" will be given a trial. This was Jerry Kane. On April 25, Kane was described as "a cousin of Billy Kane, recently released by the Browns" in the St. Louis Globe Democrat. A few days after that (April 30), the Globe-Democrat reported that Otto Van der Broeck and Billy Kane were negotiating with Quincy. Both subsequently showed up in the box scores for Quincy in 1890. Baseball-Reference has Jerry Kane with Quincy, but he was with the Browns at the same time as the Kane playing with Quincy.

So the image from the New York Clipper may in fact be Billy Kane, not Jerry Kane.

Best I think we can say is while this photo was not taken during his stint with the Sox before his September release in 1972, it pre-dates his return to the club as Bristol's manager in 1974.

The more I look at the picture, the more it looks as if, although the player in the background is wearing their road grays, he himself may be in the home whites. Was he perhaps a special instructor of some kind during Spring training in 1973? I can't find any references to him in the Globe during that time.

I may go ahead and call this as a good image of him for my own purposes , but the questions will remain, it seems.

To bring the Great Stan Williams hunt to a close, at least for now, I did reach out to the Red Sox Alumni Affairs Office to see whether they could ID the source/date of the image of Stan in the navy cap. They could not.

So, it is clear that during his brief stint in 1972 he would have worn the navy cap, but it is equally clear that this picture wasn't taken at a MLB park.

The next time he officially wore a Boston uni after 1972 was as a coach in 1975, when he wore the red cap.

Therefore, until another image comes up, I am going to scratch Williams from my list of needed Red Sox images and use this for Williams in my ongoing project.

McArthur appeared in one major league game, when he pitched one inning on July 10, 1914, for the Pirates. His minor league career spanned 1912-1917.
