Attached below is apparently the same image, but of better quality. This woodcut comes from the book, THE COMPLETE NEW YORK CLIPPER BASEBALL BIOGRAPHIES, compiled by Jean-Pierre Caillault.

John Slagle 1891

Facepack Upgrade? I don't often suggest that a woodcut/line drawing is an upgrade over a photo, but in this case it may be true. Here is Slagle, as shown in the 17-Mar-1895 St. Joseph (MO) Herald, when he had recently joined the St. Joseph Saints. For comparison, I've also included the previous Facepack image.

Anyone have an idea of what team/year this is?

This was sent to me by a player I represent dad....his father played MILB and I posted his pic in the MILB page yesterday....but, this was also in his father's belongings and he thinks this is a pic of his grandfather's team when he played....

Ross Grimsley

Anything of Grimsley during his 21-game swan song with the Orioles in 1982?

Facepack Upgrade Needs

In editing through the current Facepack, here are a few players I couldn't find much on. If you have anything better than what is currently there I would appreciate it.

Al Braithwood
Al Froehlich
Al Porto
Al Tesch
Al Veach
Al Yates (Brewers, preferably in color)

I don't know what's currently there, but this doesn't seem bad. It's from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 10, 1909. The uniform is unidentified. The caption indicates that Froehlich had just been signed by the Phillies.

This is a photo from my personal collection. I no longer recall where I got it. Skeeter Newsome is the other player in the full photo and the man Porto is facing.

I don't have Yates in color, but attached are a McCarthy postcard and his Millers Brewers card.

Al Tesch 1915

This photo of Albert Tesch is from the Lawrence (MA) Evening Tribune of March 21, 1913. The photo caption mistakenly gives his name as Albert U. Tesch, but as can be seen in the text above the photo on the left, the text properly identifies him as the major leaguer Albert J. Tesch of Jersey City who is about to play for the Lawrence minor league team in 1913. The uniform is the Phillips-Andover Academy where he spent his high school years.

Malachi Hogan 1901 Missing Player

SABR's Biographical Committee issued its periodic newsletter today and announced that the one-game major leaguer previously known as Harry S. Hogan was really a different player. So our suddenly missing player had become outfielder Malachi Sylvanus Hogan of the 1901 Cleveland Indians, born 4/16/1878 in Broadway, Ohio. He died on March 4, 1945 in Cleveland.

The photo below is his obit photo from the Cleveland Plain Dealer of March 5, 1945.

I saw him play as an Angel in 1974 at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium during a doubleheader that July. IT'S Joe (la-WHOOD) like "glued" and a hootty owl...LOL. I also heard his name and it was like that during a "radio game" on cd from Baseball Direct at https://baseballdirect.com/baseball-...oadcasts/#1970. I've gotten help different times from them because I do player audios for MVP Baseball 2005. If you want to get a cd with him in the lineup...check the cd game day with Baseball Reference Dot Com. That site has all the teams' schedules in the early to mid-70's when he played with the Bosox, Brewers, & Angels. I LOVE listening to those old radio games.

If you have any other questions about pronunciations let me know.

Take care!

tnfoto - I was looking for an image of Jim Lewis with the Yankees and found this image you posted a while back. You didn't say, but I'd swear he's wearing a Mariners home jersey here....thoughts? Also, something of Lewis with the Yankees would be great if anyone has one....

Anton Falch 1884

Falch played in 5 games for the 1884 Milwaukee club of the Union Association. Shortly afterwards, he joined the Milwaukee police department and served there for many years.
This image comes from the Wisconsin Historical Society and pictures Falch sometime in the late 1880s and offers a better visual than the woodcut we had previously.

Jim Lewis was in the Yankees' spring camp in 1980 and 1981. I've not been able to find anything of him in a Yankees uniform, but with two years in their spring camp, something should turn up some day.
