Then the video provided this image of Williams.

I don't want to get too excited but - these match road unis the Sox wore in 1972; the hat looks like it's navy.

To me, this could be Williams with the Sox in '72. He was released in September so I don't think he was with them in the spring of 1973.

One question I have is where could this have been taken - it looks like a spring site because of the trees, but again I don't think he was ever with them in the spring as a player.

Anyone out there want to offer an opinion as to whether this actually shows him as a player with the Sox?

I checked the Sporting News spring roster for 1973 and he doesn't appear. It doesn't say explicitly if it includes NRIs or not. Anyone have their list for 1973?

1972 was the last year the Sox wore button-down unis until 1979, when Williams was a Yankees minor league coach. His SABR bio says he was out of baseball in 1973, but he managed the Bristol Red Sox in 1974. I'm not sure how long the Sox used old uniforms for spring training, but if this image/video wasn't from 1972, the only other possibility I can think of would be spring training 1974. If they had already moved to pullover spring training jerseys by then, by default it would have to be from 1972.

...and if you look lower on that same page in the Boston Globe from 2/4//73 (https://www.newspapers.com/image/435...nvitee&match=1) you will see Gammons notes that Ray Culp is the only NRI in Winter Haven, so it's a definite scratch for Williams.

According to this site: http://www.bristolredsox.com/1974roster.php Williams wore #33 as the P/Mgr for Bristol in 1974....

This is it for me on ole' Stan for 2023....he may have signed 6/13 and been released on 9//23, but he was only with the big club from 7/21 when Duane Josephson went on the DL until Luis Aparicio came off the DL on 8/4. Otherwise he was getting into 26 games in Louisville.

During this period, when the Sox weren't in Fenway, they played at Yankee Stadium and Tiger Stadium. None of these locations are known for their arboreal splendor.

Best I think we can say is while this photo was not taken during his stint with the Sox before his September release in 1972, it pre-dates his return to the club as Bristol's manager in 1974.

The more I look at the picture, the more it looks as if, although the player in the background is wearing their road grays, he himself may be in the home whites. Was he perhaps a special instructor of some kind during Spring training in 1973? I can't find any references to him in the Globe during that time.

I may go ahead and call this as a good image of him for my own purposes , but the questions will remain, it seems.

Happy New Year!

Tip Tobin 1932

Fordham football (and baseball) star signs with the New York Giants, along with school teammate Jackie Fisher in 1932, gets into one game, and doesn't leave a clean picture.

Yet here's another one, July 23 1932 Boston Globe (Boston natives). it does to clean up well - and I have no info on what became of Fisher.

Blanks

Be of good cheer. I shot Blanks in color in 1978. I've got a print somewhere, just have to go through a box.

The only way I could be of better cheer is if you said you took color shots of Fitzmorris and Krueger at the same time!

Tom Kane 1938

A 31-year-old rookie called up to the Boston Bees in midseason 1938 to serve as a utilityman, Tom Kane came in at 2nd Base in the fifth inning of a Boston loss to the Pirates on August 3. He grounded out, then walked. Ten days later Casey Stengel again sent Kane in for starter Tony Cuccinello; this time he hit into a double play and then got a second walk - and that was it.

On August 18 the Bees sent Kane to Chattanooga to complete a deal for another prospect. He drifted to the lower minors in 1939 and then left the game with - if nothing else - a career MLB On Base Average of .500.

Kane left almost no photos behind him; none has ever appeared with him in a Boston uniform. One image has been pulled off Newspapers.Com and posted here and at Baseball-Reference and it's abysmal. I went hunting for better and found a couple of decent ones and touched them up on Remini and MyHeritage; perhaps others can improve them further.

The portrait (in which he looks startlingly like '30s Louisiana Governor Huey Long) is from The Scranton Tribune of July 21, 1937. The team photo shot is from The State (of Columbia, South Carolina) from April 20,1936. The full length pose is from The Columbia Record of May 19, 1936, and the batting shot from the same paper from April 18, 1936.

They're not much but they're about 4000% better than what we've had.

Lester Dole 1875

I have found a very nice upgrade for Lester Dole, who played in 1 game for the New Haven team in 1875. He worked from 1878 to his death in 1918 at Saint Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire as their athletic director. He is pictured here in 1880 as a member of the First Eleven Isthmian cricket team. Credit for this image goes to the St. Paul's School Ohrstrom Library Digital Archives, who were very gracious in providing this.

Ravelo Manzanillo 1988 White Sox

Not seen before, I don't believe, in a White Sox uni - he played 2 games for them in 1988. This post card from the Fritsch haul on eBay is dated on the reverse "1990" so probably taken in the spring that year.

So not 1988 perhaps but something...

Thanks - I have both the Cox and the Chiles, but until now needed something showing Chiles in the Tequila Sunrise uni from '76 and Cox in 1982 vs. '78.

The color Cox image was one of a series taken in 1978 with guys like Dave Rader, Trillo, Geisel and others.

Larvell Blanks 1972 (in 1978)

Told ya it was in there.

That's Rich Pilling, the long-time photographer, standing behind him.

The color Ty Waller is one of mine, and the color Steve Jones is from my collection. I'll post improved copies (and I have several Waller shots)
